Perimeter

Paint and graphite on Canvas 1200mm x 1200mm

In this painting, I consider the materials I am using, along with the painting’s physical structure. By stretching a piece of canvas who’s dimensions do not match those of the frame, I am rejecting tradition and investigating elements of painting which we might not normally consider. The painting is also an inspection of how different media react to a porous flexible surface - the difference between painting something and staining it. The painter Steven Aalders says ‘the circumference of a painting consists of four lines. So the first line you place on the canvas as a painter is actually the fifth line. This is the essence of every composition, abstract or figurative’. This remark is highly relevant to the notions surrounding my practice in painting and beyond.
